Meet our five draught horses and two ponies
At Home of Carlsberg, we have five draught horses and two ponies. We run the stables at Home of Carlsberg with the well-being and welfare of the horses as our main priority. In short, it's about allowing the horses to fulfil their species-specific needs.
We have a light and airy stable where the horses have plenty of space to relax. The horses spend several hours a day at the paddock in groups of 2-4 horses to socialise with each other and spend time outside. The paddock is in J.C. Jacobsen’s Garden, which is open to everyone.
They have free access to straw fodder to fulfil their chewing needs. They work five days a week, for about an hour at a time. In addition to driving, we ride them in nature to exercise and give them a varied day. In the summer, they spend five weeks in the countryside to relax and recharge. We get regular visits from the farrier and vet when needed.
Below, you can learn more about our horses and what characterises them.
Huxi
Breed: Jutlandic
Born: 2017
Weight and height: 719 kg and 160 cm tall
Huxi has been with Carlsberg since he was three years old and is the quietest and calmest of all our horses. He's always in a good mood and occasionally enjoys a little canter in the paddock.
Otto
Breed: Schleswig/Jutlandic
Born: 2013
Weight and height: 830 kg and 164 cm tall
You can recognise Otto with his very big and flashy bangs. He is very ambitious and is always in the front when a team of 4 horses pull the carriage.
Brygger
Breed: Rheinisch Deutsches Kaltblut
Born: 2014
Height and weight: 820 kg and 166 cm tall
Brygger is a former stallion but is now gelded. He is the father of Hof and Humle.
He is big and handsome, with a lot of stallion character, but he's as good as the day is long.
Hof
Breed: Schleswig
Born: 2019
Weight and height: 860 kg and 170 cm tall
Hof is our biggest horse. He uses every opportunity to tease his teammate.
Humle
Breed: Schleswig
Born: 2019
Weight and height: 750 kg and 160 cm tall
Humle is our adorable mare. You can recognise her by her long, bright eyelashes and fresh appetite for hay.
Maggi
Breed: Shetland pony
Born: 2005
Height and weight: 200 kg and 100 cm tall
Maggi and Sally are a great team in the paddock and when they pull the carriage. They are very eager to work and friendly to everyone. In the summer of 2024, they both foaled a healthy foal.
Sally
Breed: Shetland pony
Born: 2013
Weight and height: 195 kg and 100 cm tall
The ponies are our mascots, and like the big draught horses, they occasionally pull the carriage. They are also good mates and company for the other horses, and they are especially popular with our guests.
Horse keeping at Carlsberg
We are very proud and happy with our horses at Home of Carlsberg. The stable manager and coachmen work daily with the horses' best welfare in mind.
The horse is a gregarious animal with three basic needs:
- Movement
- To be able to socialise with other horses
- To be able to chew and eat for a long time
Here, you can read about how we ensure the well-being of our horses – both physically and mentally.
Feeding
The horses' feed must have a long chewing time as a starting point. They get haylage* and seed grass ad libitum. In addition, we supplement with hard feed in the form of muesli, vitamins and minerals – and, of course, brewer's yeast**
*Haylage is grass that is wrapped in plastic when it is partially dried. With a high water content, the wrapping creates an oxygen-free and acidic environment that promotes the growth of lactic acid bacteria and inhibits the growth of yeast cells, fungi and other unwanted bacteria. This reduces the risk of mould and mildew and helps the wrap to keep better.
**Natural feed supplement for all types of horses. Brewer's yeast has a high content of natural vitamin B, which effectively affects the mane and coat. Brewer's yeast also contributes to the horse's digestive system by stimulating the gastrointestinal system and helping the horse's digestion.
Paddock
Carlsberg has three paddocks with beautiful locations in J.C. Jacobsen's garden. They are drained with sand and are mud-free. The horses go out in pairs, between 3-6 hours daily. In the paddock, the horses have water and seed grass. In the summer they spend 4-6 weeks in the countryside. Here, they are entirely free from work and have free access to delicious grass.
Exercise
The horses work five days a week. They pull the carriage, and, for a change, they are also ridden occasionally. The rides last approximately 1-1.5 hours.
Health
When needed, the horses are checked by a veterinarian. They have their teeth fixed once a year, vaccinations, and deworming if needed. Major examinations, such as tests requiring X-rays or other specialised equipment, are carried out at a veterinary clinic.
Every 5-6 weeks, the horses get new shoes from our farrier.
If you have any questions about our horses, you are always welcome to ask our staff in the stable.
