With Golden Days just around the corner, Home of Carlsberg invites guests to a special exhibition about the working life of brewery workers, a photo exhibition in a Carlsberg truck displaying new and old images of brewery workers, and special guided tours that give visitors an insight into today's daily life on the old brewery site.
A tribute to the brewery workers on Valby Bakke in a special exhibition
On the occasion of the Golden Days cultural festival, which this year has the theme At Work, Home of Carlsberg asked the employees: What was working life like at the Carlsberg Brewery on Valby Bakke? Throughout the summer, Home of Carlsberg has asked for stories from current and former employees who worked at the Carlsberg Brewery when it was located on Valby Bakke until 2008.
Stories were submitted by coachmen, brewery workers, office students and managers, among many others. The many stories can be experienced in a free special exhibition in the courtyard and online at www.homeofcarlsberg.com/goldendays, where the stories unfold. Here, visitors can explore the stories directly from the workers themselves, giving an authentic, unfiltered, and fun insight into going to work at Denmark's largest brewery.
In the exhibition, you can meet Keld Norup Lauridsen, who grew up at the brewery in one of Carlsberg's former worker's homes. He followed in his father's footsteps and worked at Carlsberg from 1975-2010. Keld Norup Lauridsen explains:
I worked in distribution from 1979-81, where we sold beer from the truck. It was a tough job. We always carried two cases of beer on our shoulders at a time. But we got off early, and working in distribution was one of the best years of my working life.”
A truck as a gallery and special tours
On the opening weekend of Golden Days, one of Carlsberg's most recognisable work tools – the truck – rolls in front of Home of Carlsberg. Usually, the trucks deliver beer, but for the weekend, the truck serves as a gallery with pictures taken by photographer Oliver Knauer. The photographs by Knauer portray Carlsberg's current brewery workers in Fredericia, mixed with archive images from everyday life at the brewery on Valby Bakke back in the day.
There will also be ample opportunity to learn more about working life at Carlsberg and the Home of Carlsberg in a special guided tour. Our guides will introduce guests to brewing beer at Jacobsen House Brewery, stable work in the historic horse stable, and research work at the Carlsberg Laboratory, where everything from crops to new beer types is researched every day.
